Chris Rayner sent a brief report regarding the the Beijing Chuojiao Fanzi Association Annual 2011 Meeting:

  • The Association plans on holding two public demonstartions in Beijing this year, one in May and one in Octoberl;
  • The Associations members did very well in the 2010 Beijing Traditional Wushu competition. Of 13 events, 8 Chuojiao Fanzi practitioners obtained top 3 positions

Here's a few names for the faces in the pic - I'm useless with Chinese names still (even after 8 years here...oops!) but here are the names I know for sure.

Back row, left to right:
Xiao Wang (Wang Helings student (WHS))
Zhang Peng (WHS)
Wang Jian (ex Lu Yan student, Liu Xuebo student (LXS))
Dunno
Wang Ruixia (WHS)
Wu Yajun (WHS)
Top Pic - Tian Ying (WHS)
Bottom Pic - Some handsome white dude (WHS)
Can't remember (LXS)

Front row:
Dunno - always nice to me though
Dunno - again, always nice to me
Fang Laoshi (Wu Binlou student - he only had a couple of female students from what I could gather)
Wang Heling (Wu Binlou student, head of association, Andrew, Josh and my instructor, and soon to be Kims too)
Di Guoyong - THE MAN for Xingyi, Wu Binlou student
An laoshi - Liu Xuebo's most senior student, great guy
Can't remember
Can't remember
Li Peng - Liu Xuebo's student, actually probably knows more Chuojiao Fanzi than anybody else in the association and has a wicked spinning roundhouse kick in his spear set.

Maybe one year I'll remember to take a notebook to the meeting and write down everyone's name!

It's so good to see that this admirable style is still alive these times. I consider it one of the best, as it is as beautiful in demonstration as lethal in practice.
But, guys, do you practice fighting applications of the style? Do you promote the style as a complete system, or taolu is all that's left? I've seen many examples of degradation of wushu styles, i really do hope that chuojiaofanzi will escape that.

We practice a LOT of basics, basics with applications, two person applications, taolu, applications of the movements within the taolu. Unfortunately, we do not have access to a full time chuojiao coach/master so we are somewhat limited in what we can practice…we have to rely on class members going to China and bringing information back and/or bringing a teacher over periodically to give us fresh material to practice.
